Mass Layoffs : Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS)

According to January 2000 Mass Layoffs Report from the BLS, there were "1,936 mass layoff actions by employers as measured by new filings for unemployment insurance benefits" during the first month of the year 2000. Thirty-eight percent all mass layoff events were in manufacturing industries, as were 44 percent of all claims filed.

Worker Displacement, 1995-97

Thirty-three million workers were displaced from jobs they had held for at least three years, from January 1997 through December 1999. This number is roughly equivalent to the level of job losses covered in a survey that measured worker displacement from January 1995 through December 1997.
