The mission of the Cold Regions Research and Engineering Lab (CRREL), a facility of the US Army Corps of Engineers, is to "gain knowledge of the cold regions [32 degrees Fahrenheit or 0 degrees Celsius] through scientific and engineering research -- and put that knowledge to work for the Corps of Engineers, the Army, the Department of Defense, and the nation." Research of these cold regions is largely centered in the earth sciences including atmospheric and ocean sciences along with the basic physical sciences. Examples of research that CRREL has conducted for the National Science Foundation (NSF) or NSF-funded university partners in the Antarctic are Field Studies and Modeling of the Breakup of Antarctic Sea Ice, Theoretical Modeling of Seismic Noise Propagation at the South Pole, and Near-Surface Processes Affecting Gas Exchange: West Antarctic Ice Sheet, among others.
