The State of the Cities Data Systems (SOCDS) allow users to extract customized datasets on US cities based on statistics gathered by the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, the Bureau of the Census, and the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The SOCDS page links to the 1998 State of the Cities report (described in the
June 30, 1998 Scout Report for Social Sciences) and provides three data extraction systems. The first system contains census data on 539 metropolitan areas for 1970, 1980, and 1990. The second system provides monthly labor force data -- number of employed residents, size of labor force, and unemployment rate -- for US metropolitan areas between 1990 and 1998. The third system extracts data from the Standard Statistical Establishment List for 114 US cities from 1993 to 1995, allowing users to view a selection of the same statistics used to produce the County Business Patterns publications. For each system, users simply follow a series of clicks to retrieve desired data tables.
