The 276-page book (published in 2000) features a collection of essays on the development of ocean sciences at the National Science Foundation organized in four sections: "Landmark Achievements of Ocean Sciences," "Creating Institutions to Make Scientific Discoveries Possible," "Large and Small Science Programs: A Delicate Balance," and "Ocean Sciences Today and Tomorrow." A number of tools are provided to make navigation and viewing easy, including a book or chapter search engine and a zoom function.
