Over the course of the twentieth century, the women's physical education program at the University of Iowa "became a pioneer in in the development of graduate study and professional training." With only one female member of the Department of Physical Culture and Athletics in 1900, the Department of Physical Education was established in 1924, becoming an important entity in the development of graduate study and professional training.
