Describing itself as "the first comprehensive gazetteer produced for Scotland since 1885," The Gazetteer for Scotland is a geographical database, "featuring details of towns, villages, bens and glens from the Scottish Borders to the Northern Isles." The site provides maps for the different regions of Scotland, and brief descriptions of the geography and prominent families for many of the places therein. Currently, the Gazetteer covers about 50 percent of the country, focusing on the larger regions, with more places being added regularly. The Gazetteer is being developed jointly by the Department of Geography at the University of Edinburgh and the Royal Scottish Geographical Society.
