Louis Prang (1824-1909) was a publisher and printer based in Boston, Massachusetts who earned the nickname, "The Father of the American Christmas Card." The American Antiquarian Society has created this website, which is dedicated to Prang and his work. As this website reveals, Prang was not only an accomplished printer but also an early advocate for art education in public schools. He also co-authored textbooks for teaching children about color, watercolor, and illustration. This website also includes a helpful explanation of chromolithography, which is the printing method that Prang employed in many of his prints, including his best-known book, Oriental Ceramic Art. Highlights of this website, unsurprisingly, are the image galleries, where visitors can explore a number of images from Oriental Ceramic Art along with greeting cards, advertisements and other prints created by Prang.
