The mission of the Department of Arkansas Heritage is "to identify Arkansas's heritage and enhance the quality of life by the discovery, preservation, and presentation of the state's cultural, historic, and natural resources." This umbrella site brings together the activities of a number of state agencies, including the Old Statehouse Museum, the Historic Arkansas Museum, and Arkansas Arts Council. It's a great idea to get started by clicking on the Discover Arkansas History tab. Here visitors can explore narrative essays that include "Natural Environments," "Culture," and "Politics." All of these sections contain helpful lesson plans and activity sheets, which is a nice bonus. Visitors shouldn't miss the Calendar area for up-to-date information on talks, fairs, and other events sponsored by any of these agencies.
