Soil Science Society of America

The Soil Science Society of America was founded in 1936 in Madison, Wisconsin and is a scientific society that aims to advance the field of soil science, with a focus on the areas of "crop production, environmental quality, ecosystem sustainability, bioremediation, waste management, recycling, and wise land use." Visitors will find that the website features links to their six publications, most of which offer free access to their archives and the current issue. Some of the publications include "Crop Science", "Journal of Environmental Quality", and "Vadose Zone Journal". The "Education" section is definitely worth a look. The "Ask a Soil Scientist" feature is a unique program where teachers, students, or the general public interested in soil can get a question answered about soil. Teachers can also request a classroom visit from a soil scientist. The "K-12 Educational Resources" has "Activities" and lessons on "soil texture" and "soil color". The "Resources" link offers a large number of lessons and the grade levels for which they are appropriate.
