Supported by grants from the Gabriella and Paul Rosenbaum and William Randolph Hearst Foundations, the Mathematics Science Research Institute (MSRI) offers a Journalist-in-Residence Program in an effort to make mathematics accessible to the layman. Responding to complaints that mathematics is "too abstract; too remote from 'real life' to be of interest to the general public," the program developers argue that mathematics is relevant to real life (consider computers, satellites, finance) and that mathematics can and has been explained successfully to the general public. The Journalist-in-Residence Program helps connect mathematical scientists and journalists who then communicate with the public. Recent participants are listed with links to their websites and (sometimes) their articles (although some links need to be updated).
