Netiquette: Bookport Online Edition

Originally written in the early years of the Net (1994), this book by Virginia Shea (Albion Press) should still prove helpful, particularly for instructors wishing to give their students some basic pointers on interacting online. Shea offers tips on posting to newsgroups, writing email, and general electronic communications, and while some of us would like to believe that most of the advice proffered here (e.g., "spelling and grammar do count") is common sense, a short time on the Internet is proof enough that a netiquette book can be helpful for many. Some of the information on bandwidth and the like is now somewhat outdated, but the basic rules (don't waste people's time, know what you're talking about, be articulate, etc.) still apply, and instructors sending their students online to do research may find this a very helpful primer.
