In 2000 the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) announced its decision to add seven new top-level domains (TLDs) to supplement the familiar .com, .edu. .gov, and so on. The new domains will be .info, .biz, .name, .pro, .museum, .coop, and .aero. Users can read this report, which comments on the 44 applications ICANN received for new TLDs after issuing a call for proposals in August 2000. The report offers background information and a review of the special- and general-purpose TLD submitted.
