Seven Fantasy Classics for Children is an online exhibit about popular children's tales that was curated by University of Michigan students who participated in a children's literature course taught by English professor Liz Makman. This exhibit highlights four stories that "emerge[d] from oral traditions" (Aladdin, Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, and Hansel and Gretel). Also included are three stories that were "inspired by folklore but composed by single authors as literary concoctions": (Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, The Little Mermaid, and Peter Pan). For each of these stories, Makman's students have selected images from various publications of the stories (held at the university's Special Collections Research Center) and have written short annotations that provide context. Items highlighted in this exhibit include Vera Block's illustrations of the 1959 Aladdin and the Wonderful Lap; images from Tomie DePaola's 2002 book Adelita: A Mexican Cinderella Story; and a cover image from Hans Christian Andersen's 1883 The Little Sea Maid, which readers may know today as The Little Mermaid.
