Death and the Civil War, which the New York Times called "revelatory" when it premiered in September 2012, focuses not on the great generals or the political tides of this epic American conflict, but on the sheer fact of so many lost in so short a time span - and how that devastation affected the American people. As the film notes, about 750,000 young men died in the Civil War. Taken as a percentage of population, the equivalent today would be seven million dead. The entire 1 hour and 50 minute film can be watched on the PBS web site. In addition, the site features two bonus videos, a Then & Now section about caring for soldiers wounded in battle, and an excellent teacher's guide.
