National Gallery of Art Tour: American Impressionists of the Late 1800s and Early 1900s

This small but appealing, online collection of American paintings gives insight into the history, techniques, and cultural position of the American Impressionists who, while following the styles of their French masters, departed from the continental Impressionists in terms of subject, favoring "portrayals of well-dressed, well-mannered high society." The site provides brief histories of each portrait, a discussion of its provenance and conservation, and a bibliography of related scholarly sources.
