In 1864, Ludwig II, King of Bavaria wrote to the composer Richard Wagner stating his intention to rebuild the old castle of his ancestors. Speaking of the location he wrote that it was, "one of the most beautiful to be found." The castle, opened to the public seven weeks after the death of King Ludwig II in 1886, is one of the most popular of all the palaces and castles in Europe.
