In April 2018, the Pew Research Center published a study examining American perceptions of the internet's impacts on society. This report, based on a nationally representative survey of 2,002 American adults, also investigated how Americans access the internet at home. The study found that while the vast majority of respondents (88 percent) thought the internet has been good for them personally, the portion of Americans who believe that the internet has been good for society has decreased significantly: only 70 percent of Americans in 2018 believe the internet has been good for society overall, down from 76 percent in 2014. The study also found that 20 percent of Americans do not subscribe to broadband internet service at home and rely on smartphones for at-home access, while 11 percent of Americans do not use the internet at all.
